about

Perfume Cigarettes is a record of songs written mostly in my early twenties. It was during that era of college-and-just-after that I had my most ambitious songwriting phase to date - writing over 400 songs and fragments in just a few years time. A small amount of the material from that period made it onto The Lost Shores records, but many things were lost in the wind. In 2017, I had the opportunity to make two records with celebrated producer Josh Kaufman, and something intuitive led me back to my box of early songwriting notebooks in search of gems.

Josh Kaufman is an underground Americana legend. He’s a member of Bonny Light Horseman and Muzz, has produced records by Bob Weir, Josh Ritter, and Craig Finn, played electric guitar on records from The National and the War on Drugs, and you recently heard his harmonica on Taylor Swift’s folklore. Recording with Josh in his Dumbo studio was like landing in a 1967 treehouse. He called in a whirlwind of local musicians who helped us bring to life these songs about traveling, young love, search for truth, and earnestness in all things. What had started as acoustic sketches became larger than life studio compositions, striking a balance somewhere between Josh’s Big Pink predilections and my rising fascination with late 70s dance music.

The first of the two records, Troubadour No. 1, was mixed and mastered at the ISOKON in Woodstock by D. James Goodwin (featured in this month’s issue of Tape Op), and it has the cinematic opalescence of a Busby Berkeley dance sequence. Perfume Cigarettes is the Let’s Dance to Troubadour No. 1’s Hunky Dory. Mixed by Erik Blood (Shabazz Palaces) and mastered by Rusty Santos (Animal Collective, Beach House), it has a “radio” sound that I’ve always felt curious about, like if Arthur Russell remixed the Basement Tapes. The artwork comes from Alabaster Pizzo, whose work I have been following for the past few years on Instagram.

Upon release, Perfume Cigarettes finds me in the midst of a move to Taos, NM. If you have the means, I ask that you consider buying the record directly from me on Bandcamp in either a digital or physical format. The release of this album was originally intended to coincide with the announcement of my first American tour in September and October. When it is possible to conceive of a world where touring exists again, my plan is to press a nice double-record of Troubadour, No. 1 and Perfume Cigarettes. Until then, a single test pressing copy of each is available for sale.
